What is most amazing about the paintings in Titus Kaphar's new exhibit "From a Tropical Space," at Gagosian Gallery, New York, is what is NOT there. In these paintings, Black or African American mothers are caring for their children, who are all cut out in the paintings so there is only empty space, not even canvas. It forces us to contemplate the loss of these lives, all the history they would have had with their mothers, and in this world, forever vanished. It's almost unbearable to consider.
